Competing interests

Dr. Mutch is co-founder of Biovar Life Support Inc. which developed the concept of biologically variable ventilation (BVV) discussed in this paper. The worldwide exclusive rights to BVV have been granted to Respironics Inc. Thus, Dr. Mutch stands to gain financially if the ventilator is commercialized. No other author on the paper has such a competing interest.
